Andy Cardy, David Roberts and substitute Paul Griffin created a first for the Budleigh Salterton Bowls Club with overall victory in the Devon Unbadged Pairs Competition. They had a 19-14 shots win in the final match against Exonia at Culm Vale Bowling Club on Saturday.
They defeated a team from Addbrook Farm in the semi final 21-11 earlier in the day and in the preliminary rounds, had victories over Exmouth (Madeira), Seaton, Ottery St Mary, Chardstock and Yelverton Bowls Club on the way to the final. 
An impressive title for the club and one which will hopefully encourage more Budleigh players to enter the 2027 Devon competitions.​

A splendid result against Madeira on Saturday, with a win on 3 out of 4 rinks and an overwhelming triumph overall.  We certainly seem to have won more matches this year than in previous years, thanks to all the players who have participated in the friendly matches this season. Well done everybody.

​Congratulations to the Beavers squad led by Terry Flynn who have earned promotion to Division 7 this year in the Exeter & District Men's Over 60's Triples League.

​A cloudy afternoon but the rain held off for our home  match against Sidmouth today.  An honourable draw was declared as we won on two rinks but lost on the other two. 
Thanks to Mike for continuing his captaincy in September.

​It was great to be hosting another touring team on Sunday and 20 players from the Avon and Somerset Police Bowls teams came to play at Budleigh.
We played 16 ends, breaking half way for a delicious tea, served by Ann, Lynda and Penny.
We won on 4 rinks (shame about the 5th, Mike) and had an overall win by 12 points.
Well done everyone.

​Yet another win for the Budleigh players. They played Exonia on Saturday at home and won on two rinks, lost on two, but the overall score was 59-57.
It must be Mike’s captainship and team picking!

​David Roberts, Andy Cardy and Paul Griffin have won the Devon Bowls County Section 3 Unbadged Pairs competition. They had wins against Exmouth Madeira, Seaton (Paul Griffin Sub), Ottery St Mary and Chardstock on their way to victory.
In the next round they won against Yelverton, the winners of the section 7 competition and are through to the countywide semi-finals.
They play in the semi-finals on County Finals day scheduled for the 12th September at Culm Vale. 
We wish them all the best in their upcoming matches on finals day. 

Four teams from Topsham came to Budleigh on a sunny Sunday afternoon.  It’s always a pleasure hosting them and they didn’t disappoint, as we had a wonderful friendly game with a lot of banter. One Budleigh rink, with Jackey, Mike and Andrew gained a good lead from the start, helped by a 5 point score on one end. They continued their lead and won by 10 points. But Topsham also got off to a healthy start against Bryan, Melissa and Marilyn and they continued their onslaught, to defeat our players by 20 points.  In the spirit of friendship, the final score was declared a draw. 
Well done to all players and thanks for a great afternoon of bowls.

​Happy, smiling faces from all players in our match against Phear Park yesterday. At half time, the result could have gone either way, but Anne had obviously put something in the Budleigh players’ tea as they came out fighting and surged ahead to win on all four rinks with a 78-43 victory!
Very well done to all players. A great win.

Budleigh sent a mixed rinks team to Exmouth on Monday 10th August to compete in the inaugural Madeira Centenary Trophy competition. Our team comprised Ann Membery(lead), Melissa Camp(2), Robin Grenyer(3) and Andy Skudder(skip).
Twelve mixed teams competed in a rinks competition, each team playing six ends against three of the other teams in turn (a total of 18 ends). There were two Madeira teams plus one team from each of ten local clubs in our Bowls Devon area.
The competition was played under challenging, very hot, conditions.
Budleigh got off to a great start, beating one of the Madeira teams 9-1 after 6 ends. This included one end in which we scored 6! We then beat Sidmouth by a single shot. Finally we lost by a single shot to Honiton. Our aggregate score of +8 proved good enough to win overall.
Budleigh Salterton Bowls Club will be the first name to be engraved on the new trophy. We also each received a modest prize in the form of an M&S voucher. Madeira provided an excellent Devon Cream Tea. We started the afternoon with no expectation of victory but with the intention of having an enjoyable time. Budleigh team members all played well and contributed to our unexpected victory.

​It was a hot and muggy afternoon but spirits were high when we journeyed to Chardstock yesterday. It’s such a lovely setting and their players are always so welcoming, but we always forget how quirky their green is! Most of the rinks as so problematic and they challenged even our best players. On one rink our Budleigh players Ralph, Darren and Ann won well, but the others were defeated and the final result was a 5 point loss.
A good but very tiring day.

It was a lovely sunny evening for our BBQ yesterday, attended by 29 members, partners and friends. 
Mike James kindly provided the equipment and expertly cooked the food which went down very well. The whole evening was well organised and enjoyed by all.

​A beautiful afternoon for our home match against Pinces, from Exeter. Scores were close up until half time but in the end only one Budleigh rink had a significant win, thanks to Mike, Gordon and Jackey. Sadly it wasn’t enough to sway the final score as the other three rinks were defeated, resulting in an overall loss to the home teams. Well played everyone.

​Our annual Victory Cup invitation match yesterday was won by Phear Park. 
An enjoyable afternoon in the sunshine. Thanks to all who participated and made it such a success. The home team were disappointed that they could not regain the cup which they have held previously, but congratulations to Phear Park on their well-deserved win.

Another win for our teams against Ottery this week. A very hot day but that didn’t deter us from a win of 53-51 overall, though I understand only one of our rinks won. Well done to all

​Another hot afternoon for the Budleigh bowlers as they visited Phear Park yesterday.
Despite the heat, they won on two rinks and also overall, with a score of 67-62. Well done to everyone.

​We are lucky that our club is high up and has some breeze as the heat didn’t stop play yesterday when the teams from Seaton came to visit Budleigh.
Two teams from both sides won on their rinks and, using poetic licence, as I am known to do, this would normally have been declared a draw, but in this case I declare that we won 54-51 overall!
Very well done to all.

The friendly teams from Broadclyst visited us yesterday. A small club, but they always manage to get teams together, even if it means Brian cutting his holiday short.
It was a competitive game, but full of banter and at half time we were evenly matched. But after tea the Budleigh players came into their own and we won on all four rinks, with a final score of 75-56. Well done to all for a lovely afternoon of bowling.

​Our second visit to St Thomas this season, it’s beginning to feel like home! A very warm welcome from the home players and a very warm afternoon for the match, despite the clouds. 
We initially struggled with the slow green, which tested the best of us, but we managed to achieve a win on two of the four rinks and so the final result was declared a draw again. Well done to all.

​We have just returned from our three day bowls tour to Suttons and The Island Bohemians in Reading and Windsor Great Park bowls clubs. It was a great success, with mixed match results, but that didn’t spoil our enjoyment. 
The Island Bohemians own part of an island in the Thames, which is accessed by a ferry and is a very special and fun place to bowl. We had welcomed them to Budleigh last year and they returned the favour this year. 
Our teams were made up of mainly Budleigh players and we extended the invitation to some members from Ottery, who had joined us on last year’s tour.
Our final match was at Windsor Great Park, which was a splendid location, made more exciting by the preparations for the Royal Ascot week, though no royals were spotted on the bowls green!
We were very lucky with the weather and the sun shone on us for three days. Not so lucky with the scores though.
Grateful thanks go to Tony Mackness, who sadly couldn’t join us on the tour, and Ralph Cartwright, for organising the whole thing, which we know was a lot of work and made it such a success.  
Gerard mentioned them in the last speech of the tour and everyone showed their appreciation by a round of applause.
