Sidmouth sent some skilled players on Saturday to Budleigh for an enjoyable afternoon of bowls. The home team of Melissa, Bev and Marilyn won on one rink 21-16, but a defeat on the other, with Angela, Ann and Margaret, gave the visitors an overall win of 42- 28.
An enjoyable and friendly match at home to Exonia resulted in a close victory for the visitors. Whilst the rink of Peter, Marilyn and Russ recovered from an early deficit to win on their rink, the score of the trio of Stewart, Ted and Melissa went in the other direction! Overall score was 33-30.
A good win for Budleigh against Axminster yesterday. As the saying goes, it all changed after tea, especially on Marilyn, Russ and Stewart’s rink as they forged ahead to win 21-17. A narrow defeat on the other rink, but an overall 35-28 victory. Well done to all.
A well fought battle by our Budleigh ladies at Madeira yesterday but unfortunately the home team defeated them on both rinks. An enjoyable afternoon, nevertheless.
Chudleigh came to Budleigh on Saturday for their first indoor match with us. A friendly group, looking very smart in their new matching kit. Unfortunately we were outshone and outplayed! But an enjoyable afternoon none the less.
Budleigh traveled to Honiton for a friendly match on Sunday. We received a warm welcome from our genial hosts. However that didn't mean we had an easy game and the hosts pulled out all the stops to soundly defeat the visiting team. We look forward to a return match in the future.
Smiles all round before the match, and ours were still there at the end, with a triumphant win on both rinks over the Topsham bowlers 34-18. They are always good company and didn’t seem to take it too badly. It was Budleigh’s Adrian Harris’s first friendly match and he seemed to enjoy it and played very well, even though he has only been playing since May this year.
Well done to all, under the captaincy of Melissa. Budleigh travelled to Sidmouth for a friendly match on a rainy and gloomy Sunday afternoon. A very friendly pair of Sidmouth teams did not help to left the gloom for Budleigh who came away with a significant defeat. The scores were quite close at the half way stage but Sidmouth found their feet and romped away on one rink and slowly built up a lead on the other to win overall. Well done Sidmouth and commiserations to the gallant Budleigh teams.
It was the first of our internal club matches between the men and the ladies.
The ladies had won the last outdoor battle in the summer, but had struggled to gain any victories during the last indoor season. On one rink, after several ends, the ladies had yet to score and it looked like the start of another defeat, and but gradually they crept back to a resounding 19-13 win, under the leadership of the skip, Marilyn Foreman. On the second rink it was nip and tuck all the way, until after tea and perhaps the gents were suffering a sugar rush from too much cake, enabling the ladies to forge ahead to a 22-14 victory. Well played everyone and well done to the ladies. It was an enjoyable afternoon with some great bowling and banter. We are always guaranteed a good friendly game when the members of the Masonic team join us in Budleigh. Most come from Plymouth but our own star player, Gordon, always joins the opposition and does his best to beat us. Sadly for him, not on this occasion, as we continued our winning streak against the Masons with a score of 32-29. They didn’t seem take it too badly as they enjoyed a post match drink and chat, before their long journey home.
It was a very close first match of the season against Honiton on Saturday.
It was a friendly, jolly, but competitive game and on one rink Honiton took a substantial lead and on the other rink Budleigh did likewise. But the final result was a one point lead for Honiton. Well done to all who took part. The internal indoor competitions have now finished as the indoor season draws to a close. The winners are shown above with their trophies. Well done to the winners and all who took part.
On Saturday 22nd March Budleigh Salterton Bowls Club hosted their final indoor match of the 2024/25 season against 2 Mixed Triples teams from Topsham.
On Rink 1, the Budleigh team of Stewart Jackson, Marilyn Jackson and Martyn Ashmead got off to a flying start and at the halfway point of 9 Ends, the Budleigh trio had scored 12 Shots against the 2 by Topsham. The Budleigh team maintained their form over the final 9 Ends and enjoyed a win of 26:5. Meanwhile on Rink 2, the home team of Gwen Hurst, Beverley Ashmead and Peter Foreman maintained a narrow lead from the first end and came away the victors 12:10, giving Budleigh an overall win of 38:15. Peter Foreman, the Budleigh Skip, congratulated his colleagues on their performance and hoped they would maintain their form when they play Topsham in an outdoors fixture in May. Our ladies had a lovely afternoon at Sidmouth on Saturday, despite losing by 8 points overall. It was nice to see one of our previous members, Lucy, playing for the opposition.
On Saturday 8th March 6 players from Budleigh Bowls Club travelled to Honiton to play a Mixed Triples match. The match was played over 18 Ends and the Budleigh teams got off to a flying start on an Indoor Carpet that had been stretched recently and was playing extremely fast. After 11 Ends the Budleigh trio of Tony Mackness, Jackey Phillips and Andy Skudder were ahead by 10 shots at 15:5. However, over the final 7 Ends, the Honiton team, led by Judith Broom, amassed 15 Shots, with Budleigh gaining just 2. This gave Judith's team a win of 20:17.
On the adjoining Rink the Budleigh trio of Melissa Camp, John Sheppard and Ann Vincent were proving to be a strong team and after 9 Ends were losing by just 2 shots at 5:7. The Honiton team then found their form and went on to secure 15 shots over the final 9 Ends, compared to 5 from Budleigh. This gave the Honiton trio a victory of 22:10 and an overall victory to Honiton of 42:17. Tony Mackness, the Budleigh Captain, congratulated Judith and her players for their strong performance and looked forward to the return game. A closely fought game with the teams from Axminster resulted in an overall draw, with 35 shots each. Well done everyone.
It was an enjoyable afternoon, resulting in a marginal victory for both the Sidmouth teams, but we put up a good fight!
An enjoyable afternoon, welcoming the Exonia ladies to Budleigh. But sadly the result wasn’t in our favour.
Ann, Melissa and Marilyn had a strong start on rink 1, it was level pegging at the half way stage. A few big wins put paid to the brief lead and Exonia finished strongly. Angela, Gwen and Marilyn on rink 2 were well behind at the half way stage but rallied well to lead going into the last end, a good 3 from the Exonia ladies meant the final score went their way. Congratulations to Exonia and well played to our ladies!! A very enjoyable afternoon and thank you Chardstock for coming all that way. Unfortunately you met a couple of Budleigh teams who were on form on the day and the result was a win for the home team 51-20.
I’m sure they will get their revenge when we meet them on their home ground in the summer. |
