Sunny smiles from the 30 bowlers in the ladies v men pre-match photo yesterday . Good job there was not a post-match one! That’s all the ladies would like to say! Those who were there will know why.

We all had a very enjoyable afternoon yesterday, with 30 players taking part in a round robin competition, followed by a buffet meal provided by the Pop Up Dining Room. The competition was won by the team of Paul Griffin, Ann Simmonds and Anne Peacock, who were awarded medals by our Captain, Tony Mackness, who did a splendid job, as always, or organising the successful event. Friends and family joined us for a drink and the meal after the bowling. Thanks to all who helped make the day so successful. Our top male over 60’s players may well have been playing elsewhere, but the men who volunteered for the Budleigh Ladies v Men friendly match did a very good job of thrashing the ladies’ teams on three rinks out of four. It was an opportunity for several new members, who only joined in May, to play in a competitive match with friendly, familiar faces and we hope they all enjoyed the experience. It was great to see that they had already purchased our club kit, in readiness for joining in more matches in the future perhaps?
After a few dismal days of rain, the sun shone for us and we enjoyed good company and good, friendly but competitive banter. A fun afternoon and us ladies look forward to the re-match, which we hope can be arranged before the end of the season. At our fourth club quiz night, the current champions held firmly on to their trophy by winning again. I’m sure it is now back, proudly on display at Evelyn’s house, the dust having not even been given time to settle after it was brought back to the club at the start of the evening. Well done to the team of Evelyn, Ted, Chris and Roy.
Another enjoyable, entertaining evening with the slightly trickier quiz provided by our Quizmaster, John and the fish and chips being provided by the Budleigh Fish and Chip Shop. A good night all round. Thanks to all who helped make it a success. The happy winners of last night’s quiz, Ted, Evelyn, Chris and Roy, proudly displaying their trophy. The evening was another great success, with high scores for many. The entrants brought the competitiveness of the bowls rink with them into the Jubilee Room and perhaps everyone is now so keen to get their hands on the trophy, that they have started swatting up on general knowledge before the event?
The delicious lasagne was provided and served by Jennie from the Pop up Dining Room and our entertainment and questions were provided by John, our Quizmaster. We had a roll up on Saturday morning with many of our new members joining us for their first taste of a full match. 4 triples teams and 2 pairs played in three close matches followed by tea and biscuits. A thoroughly enjoyable morning which hopefully will be the first of many for our new members.
Budleigh Bowls Club opened their Outdoor Rinks on Saturday 20th April, and 40 members enjoyed a sunny and warm afternoon of bowls. 2 competitions were played, the first of which was a Spider competition. This involves the Jack being placed in the centre of the Green and the players stand around the outside perimeter with a single Wood. The Woods are all released at the same time and the winner is the player whose Wood ends up closest to the Jack. Several Woods came to a rest within inches of the Jack and, after a measure, the Wood belonging to Nick Jones was declared the Winner. The Members then played a Round Robin Competition in teams of 4, with the 10 teams playing each other over 2 Ends. After nearly 3 hours of the play the winning team by a margin of only 2 Shots was Robin Grenyer (Skip), Andrew Baker, Evelyn Crook and Margaret Ringsell. "Considering the volume of rain over recent weeks, the Green was remarkably dry, and I want to thank our groundsman Mark Perrett and his team for all their hard work that enabled us to play." Another very successful quiz last night. The proud winners are displaying the wonderful shiny new trophy. The Indian meal went down very well and the quizmaster did a superb job of compiling the questions again and keeping us all in order and entertained. There were a couple of contentious questions, but he managed to quash the mutiny before it really took hold. Thanks to all for a lovely fun evening, to Kath and Tim for serving the food and to Deirdre and Tony for their help in organising the diners.
Our first quiz night, with a sausage and mash supper. A thoroughly enjoyable one as well. Well done to Kath and Tim for the lovely hot food and Andy and Brian for manning the bar. Special thanks to the entertaining but harsh quizmaster John who did a splendid job of keeping the momentum going.
Our Christmas Draw and Buffet evening was a great success. Thanks to all who made it happen, especially Tony Gooding, whose enthusiasm was infectious and he brought everyone such joy with his splendid cheeky elf Christmas jumper! An excellent buffet was provided by Kath and Tim, ably assisted by Sue and Tony. A good fun night and an opportunity to get out the Christmas jumpers!
On 14th September the Club held their annual end of season competition, which was followed by a Hog Roast for members and their guests. 36 players competed in a Round Robin competition and the narrow winners were the team of Margaret Avery, Jackie Fryer, John Shepherd and Peter Foreman, who were presented with the Cameron Jones Trophy, by Fiona Bolt the company’s owner. The Hog Roast was enjoyed by 58 members and Guests who were treated to a freshy cooked pig, prepared by Devon Hogmasters, a Totnes-based company specialising in freshly prepared meals. On the same day, the winners of the Club’s internal competitions were presented with their trophies The winners of the 4 Wood Championships were Penny Weeks for the Ladies, and Peter Cooper for the Men. |
