The tension was palpable before the annual Ladies v Men match at Budleigh yesterday afternoon. The previous battle had been won by the ladies, so the men were under pressure from the start, and they enlisted all their best players! It was a well fought battle and at the break for tea and delicious home made cakes (provided by Jules James) the match could have gone either way. But as they say - it all changes after tea and on one side the ladies only scored 2 points, whereas the men coped better with the sugar rush and forged ahead by 17 points. On the other rink the men only scored 2 additional points, enabling the ladies to get within 4 points of a victory.
A win for the gents, but I’m sure it won’t go to their heads! Thank you to Lynda and Angela for doing the teas. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Well done to all.

Another successful quiz night at the club. The questions were more challenging than previous quizzes, and the scores not so high, but the proud winners are pictured with the quizmaster, John, displaying their trophy. It was a very close result, with the next team just one point behind. But it’s a tough challenge to beat the experienced and knowledgeable quizzers who continue to dominate the other teams.
Thanks to Krispies for providing the fish and chips and everyone who worked so hard to organise the evening. Our Christmas Prize Draw and Buffet evening was a great success on Friday.
Huge thanks to Tony Gooding who, with his usual enthusiasm, organised the raffle and prizes. A lot of hard work goes into this each year. Ann, Lynda, Gwen and Angela provided and organised the excellent buffet, which was enjoyed by 36 party goers. Generous donations by Saveur restaurant, Tony Mackness and Osteo&physio of Exmouth were auctioned to the highest bidder. Many thanks to all who helped make this event such a success again. It was another successful quiz evening yesterday and we have new winners! Nick and Alf with friends Robert and Mo, proudly holding the trophy, with Quizmaster John, who obviously enjoys his role and the banter. Fish and chips from Krispies went down well again.
Thanks to the many members who work hard to make these evenings so successful. It was the first of our internal club matches between the men and the ladies.
The ladies had won the last outdoor battle in the summer, but had struggled to gain any victories during the last indoor season. On one rink, after several ends, the ladies had yet to score and it looked like the start of another defeat, and but gradually they crept back to a resounding 19-13 win, under the leadership of the skip, Marilyn Foreman. On the second rink it was nip and tuck all the way, until after tea and perhaps the gents were suffering a sugar rush from too much cake, enabling the ladies to forge ahead to a 22-14 victory. Well played everyone and well done to the ladies. It was an enjoyable afternoon with some great bowling and banter. There seems to be a common theme with the winning team of our club quizzes! It’s that man standing on the left - Brian Ward! He has been part of the winning team in our last three quizzes. Who can stop him now? He was joined last night by Mike, Andy and Jen, pictured below with Quizmaster John, returning to his rightful post after a short absence.
Another fun evening yesterday, with fish and chips and lots of laughter. Thank you to everyone who made the evening such a success. Another successful quiz night with guest quizmaster, Gerard, who gave us some challenging and thought provoking questions and Dingbats.
The worthy winners are shown above, Ann, Brian (a second win this season), Nina and Ralph, with the Quizmaster, Gerard. Krispies came up trumps again and the fish and chips went down well. Thanks to all for making it an enjoyable and fun evening. Our postponed season opening event was very successful and attended by 27 members. The spider and round robin competitions took place on Saturday on a lovely afternoon.
The Spider competition was won by Rosemary and the Round Robin competition was won by the team of Ted, Lynda and Ann. Well done to them. Thanks to Tony Mackness for all his hard work in organising the afternoon, which ran smoothly and everyone knew where they had to be and when. Thanks also to Ann and her team for providing the tea and cakes. We knew our regular Quizmaster, John, was not available for our quiz event yesterday evening and after weeks of suspense, it was finally revealed who was taking his place.
Gerard McCarthy stepped in to present an excellent quiz, with a new Dingbats round to test our mental skills even further. A new team to grabbed the prestigious trophy this time. Well done to Terry, Brian, Mike and newcomer Trevor. The triumphant smiles say it all! So the pesky Peskies (minus Evelyn) regained the prestigious trophy last night in a closely fought battle with The Other Team. The questions confounded many, as the difficulty level had been increased by the evil Quizmaster and the high scores of previous quizzes were sadly unattainable.
Again, there were internal disputes within the teams about the answers, to be brought up at some future date no doubt, but all were friends at the end of the night. Photo above of the worthy winners, together with the Quizmaster. Another full house and a successful quiz and fish and chip event last night. But there was drama at the end when the scores were totted up, as neither of the two previous winners were able to retain their previous top form and the worthy winners were Anne, John, Tim and Sue, pictured above with the quizmaster John, and Tony Mackness. Well done.
Thanks to John for the quiz and the other volunteers who helped make this such an enjoyable event. We would like to wish all our members and families a very happy Christmas and a happy and healthy 2025. Thank you all for your valued support this year.
Thanks to everyone who came to our Xmas Draw and Buffet this evening and making it a such a success. Nearly all the draw tickets were sold and the 34 prizes were gratefully received by the winners. Thanks to all who donated them, including Krispies and Saveur Restaurant. Also thank you to everyone who helped serve the food, run the bar, collect the money at the door and especially Tony Gooding who organised the draw so efficiently.
The prestigious quiz trophy was reluctantly handed back last night by the previous winners and the new winners are shown above. Our quiz master John, who had definitely upped the ante with the difficult questions, is pictured below.
A good time was had by all and the curry went down well again. Thanks to all those who helped in organising this enjoyable event. Any disappointed teams will have a chance to quiz again in the New Year. The ladies played the gents in two triples games in our annual indoor match. On rink 1 the gents, Terry, Stewart and Ted won well with a 9 point difference at the end against Marilyn, Ann and Wendy.
On rink two the ladies, Hilary, Gwen and Ann had a resounding win with an 18 point advantage against Andy, Derek and John. Although in terms of rinks it was a one all draw, overall the ladies won with a 9 point difference. Well done ladies!! A big thank you to Linda for staying until the end to do the teas assisted by Trevor. Our end of outdoor season Crazy Bowls event was a great success. The bowls games were different and challenging, but good fun, bowling in an unconventional way and still, mostly, achieving good results. Definitely an event to be repeated. The afternoon was followed by a delivery of delicious fish and chips from Krispies in Exmouth. A nice ending to a successful afternoon. Thank you to Tony Mackness for all his hard work. Congratulations to the winners and runners up who are shown below. Sunny smiles from the 30 bowlers in the ladies v men pre-match photo yesterday . Good job there was not a post-match one! That’s all the ladies would like to say! Those who were there will know why.
We all had a very enjoyable afternoon yesterday, with 30 players taking part in a round robin competition, followed by a buffet meal provided by the Pop Up Dining Room. The competition was won by the team of Paul Griffin, Ann Simmonds and Anne Peacock, who were awarded medals by our Captain, Tony Mackness, who did a splendid job, as always, or organising the successful event. Friends and family joined us for a drink and the meal after the bowling. Thanks to all who helped make the day so successful. Our top male over 60’s players may well have been playing elsewhere, but the men who volunteered for the Budleigh Ladies v Men friendly match did a very good job of thrashing the ladies’ teams on three rinks out of four. It was an opportunity for several new members, who only joined in May, to play in a competitive match with friendly, familiar faces and we hope they all enjoyed the experience. It was great to see that they had already purchased our club kit, in readiness for joining in more matches in the future perhaps?
After a few dismal days of rain, the sun shone for us and we enjoyed good company and good, friendly but competitive banter. A fun afternoon and us ladies look forward to the re-match, which we hope can be arranged before the end of the season. At our fourth club quiz night, the current champions held firmly on to their trophy by winning again. I’m sure it is now back, proudly on display at Evelyn’s house, the dust having not even been given time to settle after it was brought back to the club at the start of the evening. Well done to the team of Evelyn, Ted, Chris and Roy.
Another enjoyable, entertaining evening with the slightly trickier quiz provided by our Quizmaster, John and the fish and chips being provided by the Budleigh Fish and Chip Shop. A good night all round. Thanks to all who helped make it a success. |
