Introduction of your Devon Under 30’s Team Manager’s and Invitation to trial/get together at Mid Devon bowls club 08/10/23 at 10am – arrival by 9.30am please Hello everyone, you will probably know us as Adam & Heidi (Tyler & Connor Fielder’s parents), that’s if you are already a member of the Devon Under 30’s. For those of you who don’t, we are the managers for the Devon Under 30’s squad with effect from 7th September 2021. On Sunday 8th October 2023 you are invited to come along to the “open trial”/ get together for the squad, which will be held at Mid Devon, Amory Park, Tiverton EX16 6DQ. It is a prompt start at 10am, where we will explain a few admin procedures & how we see the squad moving forward. We would like as many of the current squad to attend, if possible, we understand with work commitments etc that this is not always possible. If you are unable to attend on this date, let us know by email, then we can send you a copy of the fixtures list and you can let us know your availability for this indoor season. Email: heidifielder74@gmail.com Adam & I would like to invite any new members (under 30 of course!), from the indoor clubs that come under the Devon umbrella to come along to the trial day/ get together and see what it’s all about. For Devon Colts friendly matches the age has been put to under 30’s. There will be a few new forms to be filled out by parents/guardians for the under 18’s and the over 18’s will also have forms to fill in. There will also be a new code of conduct form for all players, parents/guardians/coaches/club officials etc to adhere to. We look forward to seeing you on 8th October at 10am. If you can arrive for approx. 09.30am so we can see how many players we will have, this would really help.

On Tuesday 18th July, Budleigh Bowls Club hosted our annual u3a Outdoors Bowls Competition. 40 u3a bowlers played a Round Robin Competition in teams of 4 players, with all the teams playing each other over 2 Ends. After a close-fought competition, the overall Winners were the team of Brenda Craig, Hilary Drew, Brian Robson and Richard Workman. Following the competition, the players and their guests enjoyed a meal provided by Jennie Stogdon and her team from the Pop-up Dining Room. The Bowls Club have been working with the Exmouth branch of u3a for several years and each week up to 40 bowlers come to Budleigh to play a friendly game. u3a is a national charity and the Exmouth branch is one of the largest branches in the UK, with approaching 1000 members. The u3s motto is Live, Laugh and Learn and the Exmouth branch offers nearly 100 activities, that include sports such as bowls and golf, arts and crafts, languages, book clubs, pub lunches and many more. Tony Mackness, Captain at Budleigh, said "The u3a bowlers were all novices when they took up the sport and each week it is most enjoyable to watch the progress and enthusiasm of the group". On 20th December, Budleigh Bowls Club hosted the annual Christmas Bowls and Buffet event for the Exmouth and District u3a. 32 u3a members playing in teams of 4, enjoyed a Round Robin Competition over 8 Ends for each team. The winning team by a narrow margin of just 2 Shots were Lyn Holmes, Sue Kendrick, Richard Workman, and Rickey Alvarez. In 2nd place was the team of Les Gay, Margaret Alvarez, Anne Workman, and Bob Nicholls. Following the competition, the bowlers enjoyed a festive meal. Tony Mackness, Club Captain, commented “we have been hosting the u3a Bowls Group on a weekly basis for the past 18 months and it is encouraging to see so many local novice bowlers enjoying the sport. Until 18 months ago the majority of the u3a bowlers had not picked-up a Wood and several have now joined the Club and are playing Inter-Club games”. Tony added. “I would like to thank several Club members who helped to ensure the success of the Day. Mike Clark, Tony Lim and Jackey Phillips organised the playing order and scoring, and Mo Bond and Joan Shaw who arranged such a great meal. We are looking forward to working with u3a in 2023 and encouraging more people to take-up the sport.” On 14th September the Club held their annual end of season competition, which was followed by a Hog Roast for members and their guests. 36 players competed in a Round Robin competition and the narrow winners were the team of Margaret Avery, Jackie Fryer, John Shepherd and Peter Foreman, who were presented with the Cameron Jones Trophy, by Fiona Bolt the company’s owner. The Hog Roast was enjoyed by 58 members and Guests who were treated to a freshy cooked pig, prepared by Devon Hogmasters, a Totnes-based company specialising in freshly prepared meals. On the same day, the winners of the Club’s internal competitions were presented with their trophies The winners of the 4 Wood Championships were Penny Weeks for the Ladies, and Peter Cooper for the Men. On 12th July, Budleigh Bowls Club held their annual u3a Outdoor Bowls Competition. 36 u3a bowlers played a Round Robin Competition in teams of 4 players. Under perfect skies, 18 players from the 2 Clubs enjoyed a friendly, yet competitive match. Tony's team of Ann Vincent, Paul Davis and Tony played a team led by the Chardstock Captain, Gill Campbell, and after 18 Ends, Chardstock were the clear winners by 24:13. The other 2 Budleigh teams both secured victories and the overall result was win for Budleigh of 55:50. Friendly games are played outdoors throughout the summer months and offer players of all abilities to play at other clubs in the surrounding area. From 27th-29th May 2022 Bowls England organised a National Big Bowls Weekend
Budleigh Bowls Club ran their event on the 27th, when new and existing bowlers were invited to come along and "have a go". Over 30 people turned-up and 8 have so far joined the Club! |
